Q: Does an iMac upgrade automatically upgrade iPhoto?

Does an iMac OS upgrade automatically upgrade iPhoto or would I need to purchase an upgraded version?

I'm still using OS X Lion 10.7.5 and would like to upgrade to Mountain Lion and then upgrade that to the latest version, but what does that do to iPhoto?

Thanks for any help; this forum is an excellent resource.

If your iMac meets the requirements for Mountain Lion and Mavericks, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5842 you can go directly to Mavericks for free download.

With Mavericks you will need iPhoto 9.5 which is not a free upgrade, you can check the price by going to the Mac App Store.

If I understand you both correctly, I will need to purchase an iPhoto upgrade after upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion and then Maverick. As I'm using Lion 10.7.5 now, the Mac upgrades will not be a problem. I just wasn't sure if the iPhoto upgrade was included with either of them. So are you saying I will need to purchase the iPhoto upgrade?

    Morning, Carol,

If you upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion you DO NOT need to purchase the newest version of iPhoto.  If you upgrade to Mavericks you DO need to purchase the upgraded version of iPhoto.

If you upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion, you have to pay the $20 upgrade price, but if you upgrade from Lion directly to Mavericks the upgraded Mac OS X is free.

So, Lion to Mountain Lion - $20, iPhoto - no upgrade

Lion to Mavericks - Free, iPhoto - purchase upgrade.

Either route means a fee, and if you go the Lion to Mountain Lion to Mavericks route you have to pay for Mountain Lion AND iPhoto.

    Edti: iPhoto 9.5.1 is $15.

You are welcome, Carol.  Upgrades are fun when you need a spreadsheet to figure out the costs :-)
