Can the external mic be turned off?

I got a great software program that allows me to transfer any audio media to digital, so I can burn CD's...problem is, I can't for the life of me figure out how to turn off the external mic so that I won't get any outside noise when I'm recording. I hate having to stay up late at night when things get quiet so I can get a clear rerecording.

Which external mic are you referring to? The eMac has an built-in mic (top left above the screen: turn that off in System Preferences > Sound > Input. Select Line In instead of Internal microphone.

I think I answered my own question. I clicked on the icon for soundsource on my monitor. Opened Sound Prefs and highlighted line-in instead of internal mic. The definition across from Line-in says, Audio in-line port. There is a display that shows if the mic is picking up sounds or not. This seems to work. Thanks anyway.
