The GPS does not read the satelites directly...has to have cellular service to triangulate between towers. So, in an isolated area with no cell serviice, there will not be GPS location service.

As I understand it, that's not correct. Using cellular service means that the GPS locates more rapidly but I don't believe it's required.

The iPhone includes a GPS receiver that can function without the iPhone having cellular service. The iPhone uses A-GPS or assisted GPS using cellular towers or wi-fi to help speed up the initial GPS location from a cold start.

If using a GPS app that does not store map data locally on the iPhone - map data must be downloaded, if the iPhone does not have internet access with such an app, having GPS acquisition won't be much good.
