ipad screen jumping zooming different apps opening closing

With iOS 7.1.1 my iPad is developing a life of its own.

Every now and then the screen zooms in & out and opens & closes apps without any help from me.

Have I picked up a bug that anyone else has experienced?

I'm reluctant to restore settings and run the risk of losing some stuff.

I thought I could try turning off or removing a few apps that might be cluttering things up.

Any ideas anyone?

My IPad mini of just over a year started doing exact same thing. Zooming in and out by itself and typing randomly. It would let me quit an app I'm in and keeps reopening it. I erased and reset to factory setting 4 times and same thing kept happening. And the behavior is sporadic , comes and goes. It's doing it now making utterly hard to type.

So I took it to Apple store Palo Alto. After waiting for an hour to talk to Genius Bar the first guy There saw the behavior and said oh yeah this is because of the magnetic cover so take off cover and your problem is Solved! That was hard to believe. And since problem is sporadic after I took cover off it stopped. And then 10 min later it reappeared. So since I was still at apple store in Palo Alto I talked to a manager there and he laughed at suggestion of magnetic cover but wanted me to reproduce the ghost zooming in and out and crazy typing but it would not happen of course. So he says without seeing it I can't help you and good luck! I come home and same ghost action thing reappears with or without cover.

This iPad was a gift from my employer and I use it for my work. But like this it's useless.

It's weird. I find the "ghosts in the machine" stuff very sporadic too.

Do you think it might be something to do with Bluetooth? I connect a wireless keyboard to the iPad from time to time but the zooming and jumping about has occurred when I don't have the keyboard anywhere nearby or turned on. Unless another computer's wirless keyboard or mouse is causing the havoc?

When I have experienced this problem I have been at home where we have a few wireless devices.

My iPad mini does the same thing. I took it to the Genius bar and he had me do the restore, but all that did was make a lot of work for me adding apps one at a time. I can temporarily "solve" the problem my double clicking on the button and manually closing all open apps. Also doing a reset seems to help, but the issue returns without warning. It makes me so angry. I also removed the screen protector and that really helped for a while (my brother suggested that maybe a bit of dust had gotten in there and was causing problems). I'm ready to go back to the Genius bar and see if another "genius" has a better solution----like maybe replacing the iPad?

If it has NEVER been jailbroke, here are some standard repair procedures:

First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...

Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.

If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. It could take well over an hour! Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."

At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod. As before, say "yes." Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time. If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device. Corrective action is simple - choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.

If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here. You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again. Also, read this.

I have experience this jumping about and things opening and closing a few times.

I think it might happen when I update an a barcode scanning app called ScanLife. I think the default setting for ScanLife is to use the camera on the iPad "Always". I switched the scanning in settings to use the camera only when using the app.

I'm wondering whether scanning was picking up stuff in the background and messing with input in other apps that I was trying to use?
