Q: Does the early 2013 Retina MacBook Pro have any form of SATA hardware or components?

I performed the apple hardware test on my retina Mac and it said I have an error with my SATA (error code: 4HDD/11/40000000: SATA (0,0)

I took it to the Genius Bar today and he told me that my Mac doesn't have any SATA hardware in it and that it's a glitch with the hardware test.

I looked on my system profiler in the utilities folder and it says I have a SATA connection for the flash storage...

Can someone just verify for me if the genius lied to me or if my Mac really doesn't have any SATA components?

Also I should add, the reason I performed the hardware test was because my Mac freezes randomly and I'm trying to find out why.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.3)

Sorry to bring up the dicussion again, but the glitch that you referenced above is only applicable if the AHT is looped multiple times. I discovered mine after running the test once, then running the extended test. Both times i received the SATA error code. I would not say that it is irrelevent to the rMBP, when a SATA connection is in use.

In stark contrast to cyber10matt's genius experiance, when i visted my local apple store to see a mac-specialist genius he thought the AHT error was serious enough to warrant a same-day replacement of my 512 SSD. He did ask if i had ran the AHT multiple times, which i hadn't, so he was obviously aware of the looping/glitch issue. He then took it staight in for repair.

I asked him about the SATA error and why this was occuring if i didnt have a hard drive, to which he then informed me of the difference between a SATA connection and the SSD storage medium, where the rMBP has both.

So, instead of assuming all apple genius's supply the gospel truth, they are open to human error, which in this case either my genius didnt have a clue what he was talking about, or cyber10matt's genius didn't. Im not well informed enough to make a definive decision, but i would put my money on the genius i visited being correct.

However, the issue still remains of the catastrophic freezing problem........

I didn't loop anything, I ran the quick test and then the extended test and only after running the extended test once did I get the SATA error.

Looping just means repeating the AHT multiple times one after another. The weird thing is, I retested my rMBP with AHT when I got home and the problem had been fixed. No more error messages. What it DIDNT do was fix the freezing problem. I have read from multiple sources on here of people that have even gone as far as to get the logic board replaced, but still in time the freezing problem comes back.

I don't agree with what your genius said, it sounds like he's just brushing you off with an excuse of an issue he is Ill-informed on. I would ask for a second or third opinion, referencing this case also. My Sandisk was replaced with a Samsung, which I was happier with as I had read up on issues of Sandisks failing.

But the point remains. This does not fix the root cause of your original issue and why you were running AHT in the first place!
