FaceTime calls on ipad not connecting. Message saying FaceTime failed and person not available. Help?

Have tried all the apple support suggestions, but no luck. I am in NZ trying to connect to the UK, and this is exasperating. Just using a standard email address of a person I am trying to connect , so it is ipad to ipad. Same problem with my iphone to the persons ipad. The person in the UK can not connect to me either. Any suggestions out there?

iPad 2, iOS 7.1.1
