Finder freezes - needs 20 seconds to react

Hi I encountered a strange behaviour on my late 2013 iMac that appeared out of nowhere. I did not update or install a new version of something. From one day to the other my finder is slow and does not react for seconds. Whenever I open a finder window the mouse cursor turns into the rainbow-color spinning wheel and I can do nothing. Approx. after 20 seconds the mouse cursor is back again and everything works fine. I can browse through folders etc. But when I click outside the finder window or switch to another application and come back to the same - or a new finder window - the mouse again turns into the spinning wheel. The same happens when I press the space bar to preview a picture or word doc or pdf. The documents opens in the preview window, but I can not browse through the other docs in the folder with the arrow keys for again 20 seconds.

What I did to solve the problem is to delete the com.apple.finder.plist in the library/preferences folder. But it did not help.

I have a network connection via a Thunderbolt to ethernet adapter to a macpro. But this is my standard configuration and worked quite well for month.

The only thing that came to my mind is, that the finder is first trying to verify the network connection every time it is opened and after verification is OK, you can use it. But the problem remains whether the macpro or the network connection is on or off.

OSX version is 10.8.5

Any ideas???

Have you got any external hard drives, including flash drives, or even any optical media? The way to diagnose these problems is to remove all external hard drives, optical media, and network volumes and see if the problem still occurs.

Also, open Disk Utility, select your bootup drive, and make sure the S.M.A.R.T. status is "verified". If it is, and you have a backup of your data, you could try verifying the volume and then the disk to make sure there are no problems.

Open Activity Monitor in Applications/Utilities. Keep the window so you can click on it when you are seeing the slow downs. Sort by CPU with highest at the top to see what app is hogging CPU.

Open the Console in Applications/Utilities.

If it's not already there, click "All Messages" to set Console to display messages from all of your logs.

View the last entires when you see the slow downs.

Download EtreCheck and paste results here for help troubleshooting.

Thanks for the many inputs.

Meanwhile I tried several things and found out some things.

1. Removed all external harddrives, optical drives, card readers etc. -->> problem still there

2. Tried to check and repair permissons of the harddrive. Seems that there were several (over 100) errors for permissions with iTunes and Safari. As far as I remember these were indeed the last two I updated, but I saw no relationship to the problem. Repairing permissions did not work. After performing the repair three times and re-check, all stay the same.

3. Looked at the results in the console. This is what it showed me:

5. Activity monitor shows no special use of CPU while spinning wheel. It only shows that the finder is not responding in RED for the 20 seconds.

All other applications work like expected during spining wheel. No slow down there.

These aren't loading and may be the problem. Un-install using the developer’s instructions to make sure you remove all parts of the application. Some people recommend not installing an application unless you know how to remove it.

Thanks for your input, but I do not exactly know what and how to uninstall.

I installed the espionage software maybe 6 month ago when I shared my Mac with a friend of mine to hide some private folders, but never used it. And it is right, that I do not know how to uninstall it. But that caused no problem so far. The other things are totally new to me. Can anybody explain what it is and why it affects the machine NOW and not befor? And how do I get rid of it or install correctly?

Your console log was very hard to read as an image. Next time paste the results.

It looks like something is trying to update then fails.

Go to the Espionage software link to see if they have an uninstaller.

Cleaning a computer is a bit daunting for many users. You might find it easier to backup your drive to an external drive as a clone then wipe the drive and start over. You can bring over your files only to the new drive.

@harrypottuh

Interesting.....did you by accident upgrade your iTunes and Safari apps via the Appstore???

I couldn´t manage to repair permission. Nearly 100 are still "corrupt". Wasn´t there a way to start the MAC in a special mode by pressing a key at startup and than access the disk utility for repairing task???

@dianeoforegon

Most of the times it ends in setting the system off new.....correct?
