ipod shuffle will not charge or turn on

i have a shuffle that will not turn on or charge. either 4th or 5th gen unsure...

i have tried other ipods on itunes using the same lead and it seems neither the lead or usb port are faulty.

when the shuffle is connected to the computor a red light shows for a few seconds then goes out. it does not appear on itunes.

help please!!
