Q: iphone 5 will not synch because iphone disconnected

Whenever I connect my iPhone 5 to my Windows 7 laptop the autosynch initiates. But after about 3 minutes I receive an error message that says the synch cannot be completed because the device disconnected.

Can anyone tell me what is going on here and how to fix this. I haven't been able to backup my device for months.
