Apple TV blinks rapidly but does not start

After trying to connect an HDMI-RGB connector to my ATV 1st gen on its HDMI port it refuses to start again, both with the HDMI wire plugged in and in the old RGB configuration. Upon restarting it the amber light flashes a few times and then it goes off. iTunes may see it and may synchronize its contents with it and even AirPlay starts without errors but gives no sound. What might have happened and how may I better find?
