Q: Help with restoring data from backup on a new iPhone after theft

When I first plugged the new replacement iPhone 5C  into ITunes on my IMac it showed a "restore from backup" button which then asked for a password which I didn't anticipate and didn't seem to get right

An online suggesstion was to restart the process.

When I restarted my IMac, ITunes then did a software update!

When I plugged in the new iPhone 5C this time it asked me to register it

I did this and it then said it need to update the IOS, even though it is a new phone

When this updating  is all completed, what do I need to do to get my old backed up data restored on to this new replacement iPhone?

I am in a cold sweat about losing everything  and I am a vey unconfident fairly elderly  user of IT

Plaese can someone walk me through the steps of how to get this newly registered phone to get my old data (backed up in my IMac) from the stolen IPhone 5C respored from my IMac (where I had backed it up)

If it asks for a password again,  which of my many passwords I use is this likely to be - the new phone's lock code? the old iPhone's  lock code? my Apple ID password? My IMac's main password?

Or how can I find this out from the KEYCHAIN, if that is possible

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2), Using Mail App

    Hello g-Grae,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

You are being prompted to enter a password when restoring from that iTunes backup because you had enabled the option "Encrypt iPhone backup" in iTunes.  This would've popped up a window prompting you to enter and verify a password for the backup, and did give the option to remember it in your Keychain.

If you are still unable to remember the password you created, and you did first elect to store the password in your Keychain, you can follow the instructions below to recover it:

Mac only: Password saved in Keychain

If you are using OS X, the password might be saved in Keychain Access. Follow these steps to see if this is the case:

    1. Open iTunes Preferences and select the Devices tab. Note the time of the device’s backup.
    2. Right-click the desired backup and choose "Show in Finder".
    3. Finder should now be open, showing the backup selected. Click the Edit menu and choose Copy.
    4. Open Keychain Access from /Applications/Utilities/.
    5. Paste the backup folder's name into the search box in the top-right corner of Keychain Access.

    6. If there is a password for the backup, you should see it in Keychain Access.
    7. Double-click the backup in Keychain Access.
    8. Click the button “Show password”.
    9. You may be asked to enter your login keychain password. After doing so, click Allow. You should see your backup password.
    10. Use this password to restore from your backup.
