Q: My mac book pro won't load OS Maverick

The screen flash between the desk top and the gray screen. No matter where I boot it from. Is there something I can do to recover from this? thanks

    goofeyfromca,

are you currently able to boot into Recovery mode by holding down ⌘R as your MacBook Pro starts up?

Restart holding the Command and R keys, from the Utilities drop down menu choose Disk Utility.  Highlight the internal hard drive and then Repair Disk.  If that returns an error message, even if it says all is repaired, run it again.  Then do an Install OS X, that will reinstall Mavericks but remove any of your data or content...only replaces system files so you have a cleaned up Mac OS X to boot from.  When finished, restart normally.

It takes me there to the recovery mode but it won't start, I have repaired all disks it says they are fine and bootable and just won't start. If it goes to the desk top it loads three things and after a few seconds starts going from the desk top to the gray screen. I can't get to my files which I was about to back up when this started. Is there something I can do as not to lose my files and photos? thanks

    goofeyfromca,

if you boot into Safe mode, does it still load three things and then go from the desktop to the grey screen?

2010 13 inch, the one right before retina eye one came out, does this help? I can see the HD Recovery disk is there it just won't go to it to reboot.

    goofeyfromca,

when you’ve run Disk Utility to try repairing your disks, did you do so from Recovery mode, or when booting from your grey Mac OS X Install DVD, or when booting normally from your administrative user’s login?

From the recovery mode disk utility yes, and then it sends me to my adminastrators login. I am not booting from the install USB Flash I have.

By the way incase I forgot thank you all for helping me in this matter....

If that machine will not boot to the recovery hard drive there is something very messed up.  Do a restart, but this time hold the Command+Option+R keys...that will boot you from Apple's server (you have to be connected to the internet) and will take longer than a normal restart.  You can then use the Apple server's copy of Disk Utility to do the Repair Disk and then Install OS X.

    goofeyfromca,

have you tried running your MacBook Pro’s Apple Hardware Test (when booted from your grey Applications Install DVD) to see if it can detect anything wrong with your internal disk?

I don't have aninstall disk, in the oncole it says everything is fine, utilities says the USB is bootable. Is there anyway at this point to reinstall maverick and not lose my data. When I do an internet recovery it has it for Mountain Lion or Lion..

Any termial commands console commands are anything else I could do not to lose the data? thanks for your help and patience with me.

    goofeyfromca,

all Mid 2010 MacBook Pros originally came with two grey installation DVDs in the box. If you no longer have them, you can purchase a replacement pair from Apple by contacting them directly — those discs aren’t available in the Apple stores.

With neither your grey Mac OS X Install DVD nor a working recovery partition, you can’t reïnstall Mavericks without a risk of losing your data.

If OS X Internet Recovery is trying to install Lion or Mountain Lion, then you don’t have a Mid 2010 model — you would have either an Early 2011 model, a Late 2011 model, or a Mid 2012 model.

If you have access to a FireWire cable and a second Mac with a FireWire port, then one way to preserve your data would be to boot your MacBook Pro into Target Disk mode, so that it would act as an external hard drive to the second Mac. You could then copy your data from your MacBook Pro onto the second Mac from the second Mac, completely erase your MacBook Pro’s internal disk by running Disk Utility on the second Mac, and then reload your MacBook Pro’s original version of OS X through OS X Internet Recovery.
