It sounds like you're experiencing unexpected behavior with your Wi-Fi connection after upgrading to OS X Mavericks. I'd recommend running the Wireless Diagnostic on your iMac, if you haven't already, to help diagnose the issue with the connection or device:
Use the Wireless Diagnostics application included with OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.4 and later to identify and resolve Wi-Fi issues. For further information, please see About Wireless Diagnostics.
