How to turn off Outlining

My recent upgrade to Pages/iWork 09v4.0.3 is definitively causing excess work to the point of total aggrivation because of the Outline capability that insists on putting in numbers in narrative documents if for any reason I have a need to numbers in for whatever reason and it is followed by a period. this is particularly vexing when I am trying to build a Generational Family page where it uses BOTH whole numbers and Roman numbers on the same line and since this is a major part of my work, it is extremely time consuming to FORCE pages to display the columns they way they are supposed to be.

I have searched both System and Pages preferences and Helps with nothing whatsoever coming up on how to control the Outlining feature.

I am presently runing under Mountain Lion (10.8.5) as a second part of a dual boot arrangement with Snow Leopard (10.6.8) with both set for full backups through separate Time Machine apps and their associated external HDs.

Is there any methodology to absolutely turn off the Outlining feature?

Menu > Pages > Preferences > Auto-Correction Preferences > uncheck Automatically detect lists

Hi Peter:

That worked partially but only turned off all new instances while all previous work some unpredictable consequences of change actions.

A new document I was working on is still registering line part changes for all formatting changes plus putting the cursor at the beginning of text vice in front of the line numeral designation and any attempts manually reformat or indent the line results in many different actions depending on which line is being worked with.

The automated list detection function happens at the time of you typing it.

It does not hunt out all instances of what looks like a list or not a list and change it.

Any previously created lists can be selected and changed with Toolbar > List > None or whatever you want to do with it.

Lists are styled text, so their prefixes and numbering depends on which List style you have on that particular text and what level of the List you are in, usally by typing a tab in front of the line to demote the line to a lower level, or shift tab to promote the line to a higher level.
