Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

Symptoms of a recurring bug (every few weeks) in the Apple iOS Mail app.

Error message:

Cannot Get Mail. The mail server "Imap.gmail.com" is not responding verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail settings.

For no apparent reason, on my iPad, every few weeks (often 2-6 weeks) the iOS mail app fails to get mail from Gmail. This is a hard error. Did not change anything. Password, etc. remains the same. Symptom behaves as if the iPad corrupts the gmail password — randomly and periodically.

Seems to be a bug in the Apple iOS Mail app. I have several other email inboxes, but only my primary Gmail inbox is affected by this recurring iOS Mail app bug, and only on my iPad, not on other any devices. Deleting the account in the Mail, Contacts, Calndars setting, and then re-creating the account with the same password works, every time.

Simply re-entering the password does NOT correct the problem.

The fix:

1. QUIT the iOS Mail app, also Contacts, also Calendars.

2. Delete the offending Gmail account.

3. Power off and restart iPad.

4. RE-Create the Gmail account, select Google mail. Re-use the same Gmail application specific password for iOS mail app again, if using one.

5. SET default account in four places:

:: I.E. Set your Default Mail, Calendar, Contacts, and Notes.

EDIT: Never mind. This didn't help, and neither did turning on IMAP in the Gmail account, although that's something I'd suggest trying before chalking this up to an iOS bug.

I just got this, which is how I wound up reading this thread, and when I went to verify the info on my Gmail account, I noticed an email about "Sign-in attempt prevented" that there was a login attempt from an app that does not meet Google's security standard (see below). I clicked on the "Review your devices" link and I was able to say that yes, that was me. I'm not worried about security since this is actually just a basic account for my dad to communicate with, we're not using it for banking or anything that needs security.

This was when I tried to add this account to an old 1st gen iPad that can't run anything newer than iOS 5.1, so the Mail app probably is way out of date, but I also keep the iPad locked with a 9-character alphanumeric password, so I'm not too concerned.
