Zipped attachment is still too large

I've compressed (using 'archive') a 12 meg pdf to send as an email attachment. It's zipped size is....12 megs!! So, when I attempt to send an email with this "zipped" pdf attached, it exceeds my 10 meg maximum.

Help!

In order to get below the 10MB message size limit, the size of a pre-encoded file must be roughly 6.5MB or so in size so using the archive feature or zipping this file will not reduce the size by 50% although it should be reduced some.

In order to be sent via email, attached files must be encoded. The Mail.app uses MIME 1.0 for attachment encoding/decoding which is the internet standard. The problem with MIME encoding is it is not very efficient.

The encoding process increases the size of the pre-encoded file by roughly 50% or so. A 7MB file will be roughly 10.5MB in size after the encoding process.

Welcome to the discussions!

As you have discovered, pdf files are already compressed. If you have the full version of Acrobat, there is a command in the File menu named "Reduce File Size" that can sometimes acheive additional file size reduction although you may have to limit the backward compatibility with older versions of Adobe Reader.

If this does not reduce the file size enough, then you could (again using the full version of Acrobat) extract pages from the file to make it into two or more smaller files.
