How to make my vocal recordings louder without blowing out the output and ruining my recording?

When I record my audio through my mic, the vocals sound good but are a little low. When I raise the gain on the tracks however, the output audio blows out and sounds scratchy so I cant create a good song unless the volume is low. How can I fix this?

Logic Pro X, OS X Mavericks (10.9.3)

As Art of Sound hints at....

It's not really a "fix" that can be presented as nothing is wrong with Logic, it's you learning to use the tools you have.

Also, although it's just terminology... a "good song" has nothing to do with volume, what you mean is how can I get the volume of my song up to the level of commercial recordings, right?

Don't forget that much of the commercial stuff you hear is produced my composers/engineers that may have been doing this for years, using equipment that costs thousands and thousands of dollars. It's actually easy to get things LOUD, but it takes experience to get things ~Loud~ and retain all of the quality & balance.

AOS has pointed you in the right direction.

Just to add to pancenters excellent post. Don't get tracking and mixing mixed up with mastering and overall volume. It's why I asked what your vocal level is peaking at for. In the age of 24 bit recording it is better to keep your tracking levels on the lower side, max -6dbfs peak. Even a -12 peak isn't going to harm anything.

Don't try to mix to mastered levels either, you'll head straight for disappointment. If you need your mix louder, turn your monitors up. When you've mixed and bounced out your song, bring the stereo wav back into logic and try to deal with overall volume.
