Keyboard lighting keys are not working

Hi,

My MacBook Pro backlit keyboard recently stopped working. Even though the "Illuminate keyboard in low light condition" option is checked in the system preferences, it is not working. When I press the appropriate keys (F8, F9 and F10) all I get is the usual keyboard lighting on screen indicator, but with a "stop" sign at the bottom (see http://jext.free.fr/keyboard.png).

The sensors seem to be working since in low light conditions, the display dims. Also, I installed the tool called "Lab Tick" that lets you change the keyboard lighting brightness and it works perfectly so the keyboard itself seems fine.

I tried the following to solve this issue:
- Uncheck/check the "Illuminate keyboard..." option ;
- Reset the PRAM ;
- Reset the PMU ;
- Erase and re-generate the BezelServices preferences in both ~/Library and /Library.

I would be really grateful if any of you had further ideas on how to solve this issue.

Thanks!

MacBook Pro 15", Mac OS X (10.4.6)

yeh i get that forbidden sign on all three buttons.

ok to be honest i hadnt taken much notice of what they do!

f8 ticks the sys prefs box/on and off
f9 and 10 adjusts the brightness i guess?

but yeh, mine works after pressing f9 or f10

though the forbidden sign is a bit puzzling.
ok edit > the forbidden sign is gone, for some reason, after playing round with those f keys!

I think the reason why you are getting the "Universal NO" symbol at the bottom is because the lighting conditions are not low enough for the keyboard backlighting to be set. Try covering the speaker areas completely with dark colored cloths, watch the display dim, and then try the keys... I noticed this at stores that sell macbook pros, and this is what got the backlight to respond. I think the way it used to be, was there were 3 settings for the light, bright medium and off... now you can set incrementally how bright you want the keyboard just like you set the display brightness with F1 and F2. Hope this works for all y'all...
