Q: Gmail

Why?  Is it not configured?  Does it give you an error?  We can't help if you don't provide details about the problem.

I have a new iPad Mini and I cannot connect to gmail. It gives me the error "imap.gmail.com is not responding". and asked to check the information in the incoming mail server field is correct. Since I let it set it up automatically, it must be correct or so I'm told.

I went to gmail unlock captcha and tried that but no change. Doing a google search brings up numerous complaints like this. Has anyone found a fix?

have you turned on two factor authentification? if so, there are some additional steps you need to do. (I found them very confusing)

If not - then delete the account and set it up again.  Ber very carefull with password entry - upper / lower case etc.

I think the error you are getting is the incoming server - either server name or your gmail name, or your password.    simply try it again.  note - you may go through the same loop when you get to the outgoing server.  If it asks again for your password, even if it says 'optional' - enter it anyway.

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.
