MP4 into iTunes

I have an .mp4 video file I want to put in my iTunes library. I would expect "Add file to library" to work, but it doesn't do anything. I guess .mp4 files aren't supported. What some video file types that are, so I can convert it?

iTunes:

Video content purchased from the iTunes Store.
QuickTime and MPEG-4 movie files that end in ".mov", ".m4v", or ".mp4" and are playable in QuickTime Player.
Video podcasts.
iTunes Digital Copies.
iTunes Store Movie Rentals (Requires iTunes 9 or later).
