Q: Need a Gig Switch | Comcast -> Airport Time Capsule ->Switch-> computers

Hello-

I need advice.  I just updated my Comcast Cable Modem to the lastest and greatest docsys 3 from comcast, voice and data.  Sorry I don't have the model #.

The Modem  and Airport Time Capsul (ATC) are located in my basement.  The ATC is connected directly to the Modem in port 1.  I then have a ethernet run upstairs to my office on my second floor.  The ethernet from the walljack goes into a 1 gig switch, Rosewill RC-410X, and then to my Mac and my PC.

I get amazing speeds connected either directly to the modem or the ATC and its wireless. 170Mbs +( I have the Comcast Extreme 150 package)

When I connect to my gig Swicth on the 2nd floor, my speed drops to 90Mbps(still not bad).  If I take that connection from the wall and go straight to the computer on the 2nd floor, I get speeds of 150Mbps +.  I have pretty much isolated the issue as the switch.  Any suggestions?  I have about 8 devices that need to be connected, so I would need an 8 port switch or better.  I also have an airport express A1392(small type, can't read it) newer model.  I took this out for troubleshooting but would love to extend the wireless network.

Thanks,

Matt

I then have a ethernet run upstairs to my office on my second floor.

Be sure that the Ethernet run is using, at least, CAT-5e cable. Also be sure that the cable is using all four pairs of wires. That is, it has cable terminators that have all 8 wires configured for Gigabit Ethernet and that this cable is not used for both Ethernet and land-line phone service.

The ethernet from the walljack goes into a 1 gig switch, Rosewill RC-410X, and then to my Mac and my PC.

In this case, be sure the Ethernet drop cable between the wall and the Ethernet switch and between the switch and the computers are all, at least, CAT-5e. Also that they are terminated properly for Gigabit Ethernet.

I would recommend that you run a few data transfer tests between the Time Capsule and either the Mac or PC to verify the data transfer rates. You should NOT be getting anything near 1 Gbps; most likely it will be around 700-800 Mbps.

I am assuming that you have another Ethernet run between the Ethernet switch on the 1st floor to this switch on the 2nd floor ... correct? Again verify that you are using CAT-5e and that the cables are terminated for Gigabit.

If I take that connection from the wall and go straight to the computer on the 2nd floor, I get speeds of 150Mbps +.  I have pretty much isolated the issue as the switch.  Any suggestions?

The maximum Ethernet cable run length between segments should be under 300' maximum. You may want to check this as well.

Since you have a basic Ethernet backbone in your home, you may want to consider configuring both the TC and this AirPort Express for a roaming type network.
