Jun 3, 2014 6:35 AM in response to pinkywinkyby markwmsn,First, make sure you have adequate backups of your entire system. Upgrading is generally safe, but sometimes things can go wrong. (What constitutes "adequate backups" is an entire debate unto itself, but probably you should one more than you usually do, or two if you don't normally do any backups. Keep the spare backup for a while, just in case you find some problem with the new system installation after the fact.)
You can upgrade to the most current system, (Mavericks or 10.9) for free through the App Store. Mavericks also has AirPlay Mirroring.
The upgrade is downloaded over the Internet and is more than five gigabytes, so be sure to do it on a fast connection. If your home connection isn't fast enough, try an internet café, an Apple Store, or the home of a friend with a fast connection.
If you don't want to go all the way to Mavericks for some reason, you'll have to contact Apple by phone to obtain a special code to unlock Mountain Lion in the App Store. Mountain Lion cost $20 when it was the latest version of the system; I don't think that has changed.
