Why is there no iTunes app for android ?

I have iTunes on my Mac, iTunes on my PC, iTunes on my iPhone... but my tablet is the odd one out ... why ? Actually it would make the perfect device for having iTunes in my purse when my iPhone is only 8GB, iPod 16GB ... and my iTunes library is over 30GBs... and taking up space on my pc and my mac...I have tried to have my iTunes on a 64GB thumbdrive... does not help when you forget to bring it along on the road, and where you have to work is out of range for a wifi connection to use the internet radio or itunes radio. I wish i had iTunes on all my gadgets.. oh you would say get an iPad... but they dont have SD cards which is the equivalent of a thumb drive for Mac/PC... or if you go back... a floppy disk ...

"iTunes" is a programme and therefore, you do not have "iTunes" on your iPhone.

What precisely are you trying to do, because, despite re-reading your post, I'm not sure that I can figure it out?

iTunes is simply an catalogue of the music you have on your computer and it then transfers that music to portable Apple devices. Since those devices can only Sync with one iTunes Library, it's unclear why you need iTunes on both your Mac and your PC. You also say:

...the Library, you mean? Okay, so why didn't that work? After all, you state your iTunes Library is only "over 30GB", so presumably, quite a lot less than 64GB. However, ignoring that point, and the one about forgetting to take the thumb drive with you.... let's try to move on.

You also mention:

Are you saying that you want to have your more than 30GB music library with you all the time, in case you have no Wi-Fi connection - and also, presumably - that your iPhone is not a 64GB model?

Okay - well two possible options:

  1. Use Smart Playlists to manage your iPhone so that it has a changing selection of music on it. For example, if you have heard some music recently, and don't want to hear it again for a while, use Smart Playlists to remove that music, thereby leaving space for other music. The "removed" music gets put back on after a set period, when other "recently played" music is removed.
  2. Simply add the music "files" to your Android device (the device that caused you to start this thread). No need for iTunes. If the device does not play AAC files (as purchased from the iTunes Store) use iTunes to convert them to MP3. However, many modern devices can now play music in AAC format.

A couple of things to bear in mind:

  1. Your tablet, iPhone etc. are not backups for the iTunes Library. You should always mantain that iTunes Library, so your comment about your Library taking up space on your PC and Mac is a red herring, especially as you now want to put the same thing onto an Android device as well! I guess you already do backup in a weird way, by having it on both your Mac and your PC.
  2. Android devices are the equivalent of portable Apple devices, such as your iPhone. As already stated, your phone does not have the iTunes programme on it.
  3. Without speculating, it is common sense for Apple to produce versions of iTunes as they see fit. Presumably, they see no need to make a version for Android. You can do everything you need without it.

Thanks for the response, well I thought the iTunes on my iPhone was a program(app) that came with it, because Apple puts iTunes on all apple gadgets such as Macs, iPhones, iPods, and iPads by default.

Thanks I would try the smart playlist thing, sounds like a good option for the iPhone.

Yep... I am weired with that, and a lot of things, that people like to call me "alien", actually store my work, art, files and things in 4 places within my flat, including on an offline disk.

That's access to the iTunes Store, not the iTunes programme. Yes, it is an app - for access to the store.

Just demonstrates that Apple doesn't get everything right. iTunes is:

  1. the store
  2. the app on portable devices (for access to the store)
  3. the programme on PC and Mac, which lists your Library and Playlists. It also gives you the option to edit the tags for a song (the various fields of information, including creating Groupings, changing Genre, ratings, etc.) It also backs up the content of your iPhone. The iPhone should not be considered a backup for a desktop.

... and of course, some people refer to the songs as iTunes.

Take your pick.

In an attempt to be clear, I personally try to use;

  • "the iTunes Store" when talking about the store and
  • "the iTunes app" when discussing that thing on the iPhone, iPad etc. and
  • "your/the iTunes Library" when referring to the desktop programme,
  • Songs are "songs", not iTunes.

Smart Playlists:

Glad to hear you will give them a try. You can set them up in your iTunes Library and see how they work before committing yourself to having them on your devices. Several experienced users here can help you if you need it.
