ITunes doesn't recognize IPod Nano 7th Generation

ITunes doesn't recognize my IPod Nano 7th Generation. I get a message saying "An IPod has been detected but could not be identified properly". My Windows 7 computer shows the IPod Nano as a removable drive until I launch ITunes at which point it disappears from the list of removable drives. I even disabled my security software (Norton 360 but not Spybot S & D) and it didn't solve the problem. Any suggestions..............Thanks

Thank you Allen. I tried these steps before but they didn't solve the issue. I contacted the local Apple Store and they told me to uninstall all components of iTunes (e.g. Bonjour, etc) and then reinstall the iTunes. This solved the issue.
