import xavchd 4K files from sony AX100

Failures to import movie clips from Sony AX100 4K camcorder into FCP10.1.1 or iMovie 10.0.3.

Clips are not recognized or rejected by either program.

Same problem with several downloaded "XAVCHD to ProRes 4.2.2" conversion programs and Sony's "playmemories home" Seems to me that the file names are suspect to internal Mac firewalls?

My computer: iMac 27 late 2012, OS X 10.9.3, 3.4 GHz Intel Core 17, FCP10.1 and iMovie 10.0.3

Anybody learned how to get xavchd files straight or converted to ProRes 4.2.2 into FCP or converted to AICinto iMovie?

I, too, have had no problems importing 4K clips from my Sony FDR-AX100 into Final Cut Pro 10.1.. I use the following workflow. I take the SD card out of my camera, insert it into a Lexar USB 3.0 card reader, open the Sony PlayMemories software and import the clips to my Pegasus2 R6 hard disk raid. I then eject the card, close PlayMemories, open FCP X, and import the files direclty from the Pegasus2 R6 array without moving the files. I have never had any problems following this workflow. I do not attempt to import the files directly off the SD card from within FCP X.

I too have the Sony FDR-AX100 camera. I just open the SD card and move (drag and drop) the video files to a folder onto my second drive. I have no problems importing those video files into FCP 10.1.1... Best bet if your working with 4k videos is to also convert the video files to the proxy format for editing.

No need to use Sony PlayMemories to import the video video files.

Compressor 4.x won't convert these Sony video files to ProRes.

I go the PlayMemories route for importing because it gives me a convenient means of previewing the clips in one interface and eliminating those clips I don't want to keep. The XVAC-S codec is simply high profile long-GOP, and my late 2013 Mac Pro has no problems playing back the clips in real time with no dropped frames even with effects and transitons in the timeline. Converting the files to proxy files would be a waste of time and disk space for me. If your Mac is capable of ediitng h.264 files, then it should have no trouble with XVAC-S.

Thank you all for responding.

Since posting my question, I have succesfully imported 4K files from my AX100 into FCP. The trick: import directly from the Camera. Prior to doing that, I had copied the 'Privat" camera file to one of my hard drives. From there it was not accessible to FCP. Have no idea why this would be. Suspect file names?

My current workflow: connect AX100 to the computer via the supplied USB cable, then import media into FCP. By default, the import converts the camera files into ProRes 422 with full 4K resolution. No problem with editing. However export to apple devices results in a QuickTime movie file with full 3840 × 2160 resolution. Not very useful for TV viewing! Could not find an FCP export setting with lower resolution

Had to to use the Converter to get to a file that I could watch on my 1080p TV.

I also was having the "Private" camera file issue when trying to read the clips via a USB Card Reader. Sony PlayMemories could read and import that file and once imported by PlayMemories, FCP X could read them. I also had the same issue when trying to read the video directly from the AX100. It turns out that I had done a software update of my AX100 which required that I set the USB mode to Mass Storage (See Setup, USB Connect Setting). When USB Mode is set to Mass Storage or Auto, Private is all that I seeing as the file name of the videos when attaching the AX100 directly.

Solution: Set USB mode to MTP and FCP X will see the individual clips and allow for them to be imported directly from the AX100 camera.

I am not sure I have a problem, Tom. Just bought the Sony a7s ii and before a shoot I want to test importing the footage onto my hard drive. I have successfully imported files that I recorded in XAVCS 4k onto both my hard drive by inserting the SD card into my Mac Book Pro and from the camera via the MTP mode into FCPX. All good. But they are all mp4 files. Are these 4k files or do I have to do something else to make them 4k?
