Won't startup. Gray screen appears with this error code.

Hello,

When I turned on my blue and white G3 mac this morning, a gray screen appeared and it would not start up.

The following text appeared at the top of the gray screen:

No address property found!
No address property found!
BPS::(clearparthints) /pci@80000000/pci-bridge@d/ADPT ,2930CU@3/disk@6:1

I can see in this error message a clue that might help me determine why the computer will not startup. I have an Adaptec 2930 SCSI card plugged into one of the PCI slots. (It is for my Epson SCSI scanner). Is this message indicating that I have not plugged in the SCSI card correctly?

This is strange because I have been using this SCSI card for years without any problem.

However, I have had a similar problem in the past with this computer taking a long time to startup sometimes (question mark flashes about 4 times before boot drive is found or else black screen and no startup). Every couple months, I have to perform a PRAM reset on this computer to make it startup. I am not sure if this fact is related to this current problem.

This next observation may be relevant: I did notice that the wire from the scanner that plugs into this SCSI card wiggles a little bit and I wonder if perhaps the wire it is not secure enough.

And so I straightened the SCSI onnection and tightened it. Then I reset the PRAM by taking out the battery and resetting the CUDA switch and restarted the computer and it finally booted. It would appear the problem may now be solved.

In any case, I would like to ask anyone here on this forum why this problem may have happened and if my theories could be correct that it might just be a loose SCSI connection.

Any suggestions or advice?

Does anyone know what that error code means or has anyone else had a similar error message appear and know why it may have occured?

Thank you,

Here are some specs of my system:
350 MHz rev.1 blue and white G3
OS 10.4.6
768 RAM
The 250 GIG SATA boot drive is connected via a 1S2 Seritek two-port internal SATA controller (its a PCI card).

It could be PRAM and NVRAM corruption caused by a dying battery. In your hand, a battery that does not measure at least 3.2 Volts will not keep your Mac happy. Unfortunately, you cannot count on the reverse being true.

Hi, rainforest -

Try doing a reset of NVRAM -

- Start the computer and immediately hold down Command-Option-O-F

- When the computer starts it should open into a prompt screen (Open Firmware).

- Press Return, you will see OK.

- Type reset-nvram include the dash, here and below.

- Press Return

- Type set-defaults

- Press Return

- Type reset-all

- Press Return

The system should restart. If not, try typing exit or shutdown, or you can manually restart the system.

Note - some machines may return "unknown word" in response to the reset-nvram instruction; if that happens, try init-nvram instead.

Thanks Grant and Don,

As I indicated, I reset the PRAM and I followed Dons advice using Open Firmware. It all works now. I am still curious why I have to do this every few months. When I first bought my G3 in 1999 I didn't reset the PRAM for about 2 years and it worked fine. Now I am finding I have to reset it every few months.

Thanks again 🙂

Those batteries last two or three years in normal use. They do not recharge in the system. whether you use it or not, you eventually have to replace it.

If you shut off your Mac's power strip at night, battery life will be dramatically shorter.

If you have not replaced it in two or three years, and you are having this sort of trouble, it is time to replace that battery. It is cheap preventative maintenance.
