Q: How can I transfer this video from a disc to Final Cut Express?

There's an empty Audio_TS folder and a Video_TS folder containing VOB, BUP, and IFO files. Please keep in mind, I don't know what any of that means :3

I tried to use Quicktime but it said they're not video files... but it can play on the dvd player app.

It's a video my grandma wants me to edit, I have no information about like, how it was shot or anything.

Hopefully this is an easy issue for anyone who knows anything. Thanks so much for your time!

The QuickTime Player app is just that - a player. MPEG Streamclip should be named that. If you can't find it, you may want to download it again from www.squared5.com.

You'll need to convert the DVD's VOB files into an editable format that FCE works with natively. MPEG Streamclip (freeware) can do the conversion, but you'll have to purchase the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component from Apple for it to work properly: http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x ($19.99 USD from Apple). If you iuse MPEG Streamclip, here's a tutorial on how to convert for editing: http://www.secondchairvideo.com/?p=739

Or you can use an app like DVDxDV (not freeware).

Ok thanks. I bought MPEG Streamclip a few days ago, it's good to know I was on the right track

I haven't been able to open it though, my macbook pro says it's from an unknown source (even though I bought it from apple) and when I try to change the security setting for that it doesn't make a difference.
I've been trying to talk to apple customer support about it but I haven't made much progress getting them to understand what I need from them

I'm so dumb, can I ask you one more thing?... I have something called:
QuickTimePlayer7.6.6_SnowLeopard.dmg
Is that the Playback Component? Or just basic MPEG Streamclip itself? (I'm good at editing once I have the files in the program, I swear >.<)

Here's the solution that ended up working for me:

It turns out I can't use the quicktime playback component with my operating system, which is OS X 10.9.2
But I could use VLC to put the VOB file in mp4 format, which I can then open with MPEG Streamclip; then I can export to quicktime and open in Final Cut
