Q: Help - I can't set up my HP Deskjet 3050a j611 wireless printer.

Help - I can't set up my HP Deskjet 3050a j611 wireless printer to work wirelessly from my brand new MacBook Pro and I've lost the original installation CDs that came with the printer.   It used to work perfectly on my windows laptop and still does from my iPad.

I have just purchased a MacBook Pro notebook (June 2014) and I've downloaded drivers from the Apple site (they are dated October  2013) but when trying to set up it's not finding the printer.    however, I did try setting it up using the IP address and it will then communicate with the printer in that I can send a test page but that is all it will do.  I am sure I still need to download something else to solve the problem !      I've lost the original printer CD and can't find any other software or drivers on line.  Can anyone help me please as I have never used a Macbook before and so I'm not sure what else I can do and I really need a printer that works !!

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.3)

Follow the printer's instructions for connecting the printer to your network. Use the printer's display if it has one. Once your printer is on your local network go into preferences on your computer and choos add network printer.

Thank you so much fr your quick reply Bob but I dont think your response will help me, unless I have misunderstood, as I thought I had followed the instructions on how to set up on a printer on a Mac.

Are you perhaps saying that I should connect to the Printer via a USB lead first to set up it up  ?   This is a wireless printer and it recognised my Ipad and iphone immediately without havng to change any settings on the printer itself.

Forgive me but I have never used a Mac before so am not familiar with setting things up in Mavericks yet.   I went into System Properties as instructed, into printers & Scanners but my printer is not listed anywhere.

The only way I could set up anything was to set it up through the  IP address and although they appear to be communcating with each other (in that it will wirelessly clean the print nozzles and a test page.), that is all it will do.

My instincs are teling me that the problem is that it is not listing my printer in System Properties and I think I should be looking for a correct driver or softwae from somewhere but I cannot find one any.

I am now also wondering if I need to undate my firmware for my Netgear Router but I don't now how to log into this either on a Mac !!

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thank you Linc Davis for your response - I will have a look at this and give it a go.

In the meantime I have just realised that I made a typo in my question - the printer is an HP DESKJET 3055A J611 - not a 3050A !   Not sure if this makes any difference to the set up, apart from being the correct drivers.
