I updated the o/s on my at&t iphone 4s to iOS 7.1.1 and now it won't load my gmail account - "imap server not responding, check settings message"

I would start with closing all open applications as outlined in the first article and power cycle the device. If the issue persists, the easiest way to troubleshoot this issue would be to delete the account and add it back to the iOS device.
