Sounds like an intermittent connection. The charging problem could be caused by:

1. Bad charger. Make sure you are using the charger that came with your iPad and you have it plugged into a known good wall outlet. If you have access to a different Apple charger try using the other charger.

2. Bad cable. Try a different Apple or name brand cable. Do not use cheap third party cables.

3. Dirt, lint or fuzz in the connection ports. Check and carefully clean with a wooden toothpick if necessary.

4. Software glitch. Try is a reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart.

5. Hardware problem. Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

Hello, Dugfoo.

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

This sounds like either the charging cable is not completely connected, you are using a third party charger or the USB port on the computer is not high powered. Make sure the device is being charged via the included cable and USB power adapter. If these are being used to charge the device with the same results, see the information in the article below.

I am an iOS app developer, and facing exactly same problem.

Here is my test cases (all connected with Apple's cable):

iPad Air 2 - MacBook Pro 2016

iPad Air 2 - MacBook Air 2013

iPad Air 2 - MacBook Air 2011

I have been replace my iPad for TWO times and as you can see all my MacBooks have this problem.

In my experience this happens randomly, in most case I will have to change my cable (to either Apple's or non-Apple's) to make it functioning again. Sometimes a reboot of MacBook will work.

This is definitely Apple's fault. And I am so surprise that after 5 years this bug is still here.

It just doesn't work. Shame on you, Apple!

I just replaced the cable as it went bad, Always buy at the Apple Store, I haven't replaced the plug portion yet. A little disappointed in the Apple products though, I have had two earbuds go bad one within a month of buying it and then the cable and now it sounds like the plug portion has failed. Can the third party replacement parts be that much worse? I bought third party ear buds and they are going strong.
