wired internet

In need to connect my Macbook (2 USB's) to the modem by wire (security concern in new location). While I can connect wirelessly, I'm unable to find the settings for a wire connection to the modem - can use Ethernet cable (yellow? blue?) or USB as required, but I do need information on what settings I should use.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.7), (2 USB)

Hi Thomas,

In order to use a wired connection to your modem you will want to use an Ethernet cable - the color of the cable does not matter. This article gives a good explanation of how to set up your System Preferences > Network for connecting to the Internet -

Connecting to the Internet via cable, DSL, or local area network (LAN) in Mac OS X v10.6 or later

As it seems you are concerned about security - and if you are directly connected to your cable modem rather than going through a router, I agree that this could be an issue - you may want to turn on your MacBook’s firewall. See this article for information on how to do so -

OS X: About the application firewall

You may also want to consider putting a router between the modem and your computer. This article talks a little bit about it -

OS X Mountain Lion: Use a network hub, router, or switch

While the article’s title says “Mountain Lion” the information is valid for other operating systems as well.
