Q: ibook display at start up is half size

When the computer is turned on the grey startup screen is full size then goes to half size for normal operation.  I have already reinstalled the OS and zapped the pram.  When I open the display window of the system preferences it shows the main display as 640x480 with no other options and a second display window with 1920x1080 and no options even though there is no other display hooked up.  It seems like the main display is stuck in 640x480 which is why it is so small. The apple store genius bar was no help.  Any ideas?  Is this a settings issue or a hardware issue?

Running OS 10.2

Did you ever get the display to appear normally after you'd

you'd posted about this same issue back in Feb/March?

Exactly which model iBook do you have?

Did you look into using the switch res X software or read up

on some older patch such as the extended desktop for old

    iBooks http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html

    •Switch ResX*

    http://www.madrau.com/

*For older versions, see download links at bottom D/L page

and that reads like the following...

"For Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, SwitchResX 3.8.7 is still available here.

Versions prior to SwitchResX 3 for Panther or even for MacOS 9

    are available on this page."

Or see a list of really older ones here:

Hard to say if the issue is based in hardware or software.

Do you have an external backup of the OS in a FW HDD?

A clone or second bootable external system may help to

troubleshoot some aspects of a possible failed component.

Been years since I had a few Macs that ran Jaguar. Or booted 9.

Or the 1984 Macintosh I almost bought, when new. Or a room

full of 80+ Macs that I'd repaired my self, then donated to charity.

    Good luck...!

No luck so far couldn't get a switch resx to work.

It is an ibook version 2.3 900MHz Power PC G3 with 640MB RAM

Never got it working after my original post.  Used to work fine then one day it just went half size.  Cant figure out why in the display options it shows 2 monitors.  The mail display is at 640 x 480 and is all greyed out and the second display is at 1024 x 768 and is all greyed out except for the 1024 x 768 which is checked and black but has no other options.  There is also no arrange option.
