using iMac as a display for macbook pro

I have a 27 inch late 2009 IMAC and a early 2013 macbook pro retina display..

i would like to use my imac as a display for the macbook pro...

i tried screen sharing wirelessly but i am unable to make the window on the imac take up the full screen, even when i enter full screen mode theres blank grey space around what is displayed.. i can make it smaller but not bigger so even though its shared on the imac its about the same size as my 15 inch macbook pro

i have tried a thunderbolt cable as well and using target display mode... the port on my imac is one that looks like a screen or box. the one on my imac looks like a lightning bolt... when there connected the command and f2 key doesnt do anything. i also tried using fn command f2 as well.

can someone please help me connect these or tell me if im missing something here.

Huh, It should work like this:

Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Apple Support

iMac Model

Cable Supported

Port on Source Computer

iMac (27-inch Late 2009)

Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort

Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt

Actually that table seems illogical. The cable supported is mini to mini display but the port says "or Thunderbolt"

Does that seem contradictory to you?
