Q: Will an iPad 2 be upgradable to iOS 8?

I have an iPad first gen that only was upgradable to iOS 5.11.  I am thinking about getting a refurbished 2nd Gen.  Will that be upgradable to iOS 8 when it comes out this Fall, or should I look for a newer refurb gen like a 3rd or Air?

    You can buy any app on the Apple Store one day ... and next week or next month it can be deleted, and you will not get your money back. That's the way it's always been. You can buy an app that is full price one day, and then a few days later, you can see it for $0 ... and you will not get a refund.

     

    This has always been the way it's been. It's nothing new since the beginning of the store and the iOS for our devices. It sounds like you're complaining about Apple policy and that's not part of what we do here on the forum of "users helping other users" solve their technical issues and problems.

     

    If you want to give Apple "feedback" ... I would try here, as this forum is not for feedback ...

    Sorry but you sound like an Apple support person. I have previously seen an Apple Tech respond to some posts. And they have to be monitoring these just to keep up with what Apple buyers are saying and if not, they should. We pay good money for their products and just want answers and our issues resolved.

    Actually from what I read in the iOS press (and unofficially, by the way) is that the next revision that is coming out is iOS 8.1 (we've already had 8.0, 8.0.1 [short-lived] and 8.0.2 so far).

    IOS 8 is a brand killer. Talk about making loyal patrons have buyer's remorse... After downloading IOS 8 on my iPad it has rendered the device almost unbearable to use. Touch sensitivity, accuracy, speed, sluggish transitions, etc. has been the new standard. There was no true value in this update. I get that the operating system has to evolve to bring new products to market, whether or not you agree if the new iPhone 6 models are truly worth it. But to not warn customers or allow them to revert back to the operating system that their devices were intended to use is ridiculous. Apple has become it's greatest enemy; bloated fat that does not fulfill its original core vision of simplicity and user-friendliness that rewards its customers with the promise of something better...

    I updated my iPad 2 and iPhone 4s last Friday in order to take advantage of the new and improved features. Not worth it. My iPhone seems to be doing well compared to my iPad. It is extremely slow, jerky, and frequent lookups. It's is really ridiculous. Does anyone have a clue when there may be a functional version of iOS 8? I have the latest updates available and all my apps are updated per instructions. I even had two lockups here just trying to enter this reply. Not at all happy with this obvious "BETA" (or should I say ALPHA" version) version of software.

    This forum is for "users helping other users" ... and so I'm not an Apple Support person and don't work for Apple or any stores that sell Apple. I'm a user like everyone else on this forum. Apple Tech Support is not here. If you want Apple Tech Support ... and surely people should be able to get Apple Tech Support if they want ... it's NOT HERE ... but it's at the official Apple pages for that ...

    Well ... iOS 8 is not a brand killer to the vast and overwhelming users on the installed user base for iOS devices. What you see here is merely a very small minority of people who say that their devices are not working for them. Now, just because they are a very very small minority doesn't mean that they don't have a problem that needs some fixing (and it can be fixed, because the fact that there is a vast majority who have no problem shows that fact). So, yes, they do need some help for something that is related to perhaps some corrupt file in their system or maybe even a hardware failure of some kind with their iOS device. That all has to be checked out.

     

    Right now ... as we speak ... Apple is selling in their online store, iPad 2s that you can have shipped out to you TODAY ... and they are capable of running iOS 8 and are fully upgradeable to iOS 8.0.2 (soon to be 8.1 in a few days). So, since those are being sold right now, and since many iPad 2 users have no problems with this ... that provides the "baseline" of operation showing that they iPad 2s do not have a problem with that. Any problems that one encounters are related to something very specific to that particular device, and NOT all the devices (i.e., the iPad 2s) in general. That should give everyone encouragement that they don't have something that "cannnot work".

    It's fully functional to me, right now as I'm typing this to you on this forum. And it's fully functional to the vast and overwhelming majority of the installed user base, too. That should give you all the information you need to KNOW that you can have it fully functional on yours, too. Whatever is specifically going on with your particular iOS device will need to be fixed, of course, but it's not something that is related (whatever is wrong with yours) to the entire installed user base.

    To get your iPad to the same state as the ones that Apple are selling TODAY on their online store site, follow these instructions.

     

    Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings

     

    And be sure to do your backup before fiddling with your iPad. Don't restore your own personal data just yet, though, when you set it to new and fresh condition. Now you have the exact same thing as Apple is selling.

     

    IF you have a problem in this "new and fresh condition" ... then that may indicate some kind of hardware failure, and it should be checked out by Apple to see if there is a hardware problem. That's the first thing they check anyway, when you take it to them.

    How representative is this forum of iOS users in toto whose iPads etc have been rendered almost useless by this "update"?  It may be that there are many many more iPad users out there who never use forums such as these to vent their frustrations etc. given the reception they may well receive!  Your assertion that's it's only a very very small minority who have issues with this "update" is surely just an opinion.

    I see you're expressing an "opinion" too ... :-) ...

     

    However, there are multiple millions who are "not here" getting help, and there are only a very few who are here getting help. The iOS media/news reports do not report the vast and overwhelming majority of the installed user base having problems ... and believe me ... if they were, THAT would be "news". It's not there. There are reports that a few are having problems, as is the case with every major upgrade that has ever been done, since the very first iOS device, the iPhone.

     

    No, it's not a major problem. But, it is a problem for an INDIVIDUAL user, which it's necessary for that one user to fix for himself or herself. These are individual problems and problems that are related to the usage and perhaps corrupted files and maybe corrupted installation process for their particular machine or even a possible hardware failure.

     

    I would tell all users to get a hardware check on their iOS device regularly, just to log the results over a period of time. And you should expecially have a hardware check if you're having problems right now.

    No,  if you read my post carefully I am NOT expressing an opinion unlike you e.g. "there are multiple millions who are "not here" getting help, and there are only a very few who are here getting help".  How do you know that!!!


    However your allegiance to Apple is commendable;  given their current issues I'm sure they're vey grateful for all the support they can get.
