Help! Safari keeps telling me my Mac has a virus and now the back button won't work. Do I really have a virus and what should I do to fix the problem?

Yesterday my MacBook Pro began running slower and now Safari continues to be redirected to a page saying 'WARNING: Your PC maybe INFECTED. Call TECH SUPPORT at 800-797-0153 to clean your computer. www.consumeronlineservices.com'.

The back button in Safari now refuses to work, and I'm unsure if this is a problem with Safari or my laptop (honest to God, I know nothing about computers). Anyways, I tried to call the number given, but there was no answer, and I'm assuming this is the actual virus itself.

How can I get my laptop running back to normal? Is there a way to check for a virus and remove it?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012)

OK, so you saw the number on the Safari screen and you called it, but got no answer, right? Then you should be fine. As long as you did not provide access to your computer remotely, give anyone any personal information, or give anyone your credit card account number, you really haven't done anything that would allow access into your computer or your personal info.

All you need to do is Force Quit Safari, I would recommend clearing all Website Data as outlined in my original post above. Then, when you open Safari again, do so by holding down the Shift Key while opening it.

You may want to avoid visiting the website that you were looking at when this happened.

This is a scam! Do not respond in any way... do not try to call again, and do not visit the website. There is no virus involved, and your web browser will never legitimately tell you that you have a virus. (It may warn you that a site you are trying to visit is dangerous, but that's different.)

Quit Safari. Force-quit if necessary. Then hold down the shift key while re-opening Safari. This will prevent it from trying to reload that scam page.
