Nike + Ipod compatibility

I've read that to use the Nike+ Sport Shoe Sensor, you need a NANO. I have an IPOD Mini 6 gig and am wondering if I can use it with some kind of update download, or is the NANO really the only Ipod you can use with it -

Currently, only the iPod nano contains the correct instructions in its firmware to enable the usage of the iPod Sport Kit. This may have been done because the hard drives used in most other iPod models are much more susceptible to being dropped than the iPod nano's flash media.

the nano is truly the only system this works with. Apple is looking at enabling the sensor in other versions of the ipod. But that's not happening anytime soon.
