Headphone controls not working on 3g iPod Shuffle

Apple headphone controls no longer work on my 3rd generation iPod Shuffle. I can play music but cannot pause, skip or adjust volume (there are no buttons on the 3g iPod Shuffle).

I have tried different headphones and have restored the iPod Shuffle on iTunes, but still not working. Is there a solution or I just have to buy a new one?
