How To Prepare Macbook Pro For Sale (SSD Preparation)?
I recently for the first time erased my hard drive (ssd) and installed a fresh copy of Mavericks using the recovery partition. Everything went fine, but I was introduced to the issue of securely wiping ssd. I thought ssd was the present and the future but it seems (at least in my mind) that they have a serious achilles heel when it comes to security. Apple's Disk Utility allows for the good 'ole spinning plate hard drives to be wiped (written over with zeros) up to government security standards (awesome)! But apparently ssd behave differently and the method of erasing is not secure. Data can easily be left behind (even though you erased the drive) and apparently ssd degrade over time based on how many overwrites have been performed.
So in an age where our PC's contain sensitive data how does one go about securely wiping an ssd? Best scenario to use for this topic would be to sell your Macbook Pro. How do you prepare your Macbook Pro for sale by 1.) thoroughly wiping the ssd and 2.) not damaging the ssd?
Now I know one solution would be to replace the ssd with a new one and have the old one properly destroyed. But if that is done and you are selling the computer, how does the buyer receive the computer with the recovery partition like it comes from the factory?
Thanks in advance for any solid responses.
Side note discussion: Are the old spinning plate hard drives "better" than ssd given the issue stated above? (i.e. do governments not use ssd)
