Q: 10.2.8 and USB drives

I have an ancient G3 iBook running 10.2.8 from which I want to transfer some files, but I can't get my USB 2.0 drive to show up anywhere. Suggestions?

Was there any indication of it in System Profiler or in Disk Utility?

If the format of the USB drive uses port power, it may not have

enough power to spin one. If the item is a USB Flash one, it

may have backward compatibility or format issues. Most USB2

drives and USB flash are backward compatible to USB1.1

Since you say USB2.0 enclosure for a hard disk drive, the item

may have issue with the older Mac and OS X 10.2.8 Jaguar.

Do you have another USB cable to test?

Usually with older Macs and file transfers, a FireWire device

drive and cables for FW400 works best. USB1.1 is way slow.

Not sure if resetting the NVRAM/PRAM may help. Some kinds

of odd effects can be remedied by using that or the PMU reset.

A power management unit reset varies with G4 computer build.

    Good luck!

No, it doesn't show up in Disk Utility. I'll look into the other things. Thanks for the help!

G3 iBooks can't boot Mac OS X off USB.  You are far better off with Firewire 400 (6 pin).  http://www.macsales.com/ has cases and drives with that.
