Creating Custom Titles in FCPx

I would like to create a custom title, specifically some type of image that rolls up on the lower third of the screen and contains some text appropriate for where it appears in the video. Reuse is desirable like all the existing titles. Can something like this be done within fcpx? Or is this something that I need to purchase Motion to make and then "import" into fcp?

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

FCPX contains the "Motion Engine" but all templates are actually created in Motion. They are not technically "imported" into FCPX. More accurately, they're "published" to FCPX (and from Motion, they are automatically installed upon saving.)

Motion makes creating Titles very easy. Just choose Final Cut Title from the Project Browser when you open Motion or start a new project. The Title Background layer represents the FCPX storyline and you get a line of "starter text". You can do anything you like for the project, and when you very simply "Save" the project, it's immediately available in FCPX (you do not have to restart!)

Even if you're not going to be designing a lot of custom templates, Motion is still well worth the investment (you can get in and tweak/customize almost all of the templates that come with FCPX to your liking — or set the default settings for the available published parameters to your specific preferences.)

although already perfectly answered by our Motion-'guru' Fox M., I like to chime in with an example ...

first of all: I'm no expert (Daddy does movies 😁..) nor a designer - forgive my amateurish 'looks'. Anyhow, for my weekly soccer reports, I built my own set of custom titles & transitions in Motion:

#1 shows a 'stationary title', which is shown all along the project, to inform the viewer 'who vs whom', team-colors, goals ... and some silly 'watermark', I meant for fun (C2 is the 'league' my boys play in).... a checkbox allows to switch btw. 'home' and 'away' sorting...

#2 is a custom built transition (all done in Motion, fake 3D, motion blurr etc..), team logo swooshes in, changes to league number, and hiding a simple disolve btw A and B

#3 my personal masterpiece, needed quiet a while to figure out THAT beast of usability 😝 : a 'scorer' title: lower-third swooshes in, some silly 'glare' rolls along, from side a still of scorer rolls in (and out), a drop zone allows to customize title within FCPX with other teams logo - AND there's a drop-down-menu, I can select the scorer, and that title automatically changes photo and name!...

this and a few more 'in action' for example here: http://youtu.be/WEwURaP02dw

you see, ... needs some time to 'get' the concept behind all that (behaviours? snapshots?? replicators???) ... but the time you invest in making this once, saves tons of time using it hundreds of time in FCPX..

plus, it gives YOUR projects YOUR look ... 😉

best 40$ investment for a long time, I can promise! 😁

I learned a lot watching dozens of tutorial from Mark Spencer, search at YouTube for MacBreak Studio .... plus, the usual suspects, Larry Jordan, izzy, fcp.co, even creativecow ... and many 'old' tricks from obsolete Motion4 can be re-enacted in M5 ...

have fun!
