error (-54) PLEASE HELP

I just recieved a new ipad today, downloaded a few games that I've been playing on my iphone then went to plug it in to transfer music and pictures and the first thing that pops up is this irritating error (-54) message, so it doesn't sync or charge! I love apple but I am forever having syncing issues with all of the devices I own from them. Please help, and put it in lamens terms please and thank you.
