Question: Rewind, Play/Pause, Skip buttons not working?

I don't know when exactly this started happening, but it was within the past week or two. The Rewind, Play/Pause, and Skip buttons (F7, F8, F9) on my Macbook Pro 13in. have stopped working. I read on other forums that they would work with a long delay in between pressing it and it actually working, but they have stopped working altogether for me. I also read about some quicktime program running, and I looked through my Activity Monitor on here, but haven't seen that. I have all of the most recent updates on everything. Yesterday, June 3rd, I installed iTunes 11.2.2, which didn't affect anything in my iTunes. But this stopped working before that. Any resolutions to this issue? Thanks in advance!

When I went into Settings and Keyboard, the "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" was already disabled. All of my other keys work great - brightness, navigator, volume - it's only rewind, play/pause, and skip. I enabled it and then disabled it again, but it still won't work. I haven't had any problems with my MacBook before this, and I've had it for four years.

Hi cradeka8,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that the keys for rewind, play, and skip are not functioning on your built in keyboard any longer. Are any of the other functions on the top row (function keys) such as screen dim or brightness (F1 and F2) working? If none of the function keys are reacting to what you would expect them to do, I suggest making sure they are not selected to be used as standard function keys (make sure the box is unchecked). Please use the following article as a reference and let me know if you need further assistance.

Mac OS X: How to change the behavior of function keys

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3399

  1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
  2. From the View menu choose Keyboard (or Keyboard & Mouse in Mac OS X v10.5.8 and earlier).
  3. Click Keyboard, if necessary.
  4. Enable "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys."

With this option enabled, the top row of keys will act as standard function keys (F1 - F12) and not perform special functions such as volume control. To use the features shown on the icon printed on one of these keys while this option is enabled, press Fn. For example, if the above option is enabled, press Fn-F10 to toggle mute on or off.

I hope this helps,

-Joe

I'm having the same issue. Macbook Pro running 10.9.4, iTunes 11.3. Play/Pause and next/prev song buttons don't work on internal keyboard and external keyboard. All the other FN keys work as expected: brightness, keyboard brightness, volume/mute, etc.

Any resolutions/workarounds?

Branching off the Google Chrome suggestion, if you have any other program which may be "hijacking" the function, this may be the cause. For example, I have doubleTwist, and the proper function returned to these keys when I quit the program. I can only assume that doubleTwist was attempting to use these key functions which prevented iTunes from doing the same.
