iTunes freezes after launching

iTunes version: 11.2.2

OS X 10.9.3

MacBook Pro Early 2011

Recently, iTunes has been freezing almost immediately after launching, irrespective of other applications running. The problem persists even in Safe Mode, and I have to Force Quit the application each time. Some times it runs fine for one song, but usually freezes immediately (not responding with spinning pinwheel).

What are the troubleshooting steps for this issue? Restarting my computer has not resolved the issue.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

After contacting Apple Support, the following resolved my issue:

1. Open the Finder

2. In the Menu Bar, click Go

3. While holding the 'Option' Key, select Library

4. Open Preferences

5. Trash the following files: com.apple.iTunes.plist and com.apple.iTunes.plist.lockfile

6. Restart the system

Hi Plasma,

I had the same freezing issue upon startup after the new update. I now have 11.2.2 (3). I found that by disabling the connection to the iStore, that iTunes would start normally, but upon connecting to my iPhone 5 for sync it would hang. I deleted the 2 files you suggested above and restarted the system which then loaded iTunes successfully even when I signed into the iStore. I thought everything was fixed until trying to sync my iPhone. Hanging again upon trying to recognize my phone.

Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Before deleting the .plist files, we tried the following as well:

When in the Library (follow steps 1-3), open Caches and trash all the files. Next, open Saved Application State and trash all those files. Restart the system. Perhaps this only works in conjunction with deleting the .plist files.

Alternatively, check whether the problem persists on the Guest User account. If it does, you may have an issue with the operating system, in which case you might have to reinstall it (after backing up). If you cannot duplicate the problem in another account, then this probably won't solve the issue.

After reading about your issue, I tried syncing my own iPhone and experienced the freeze as well. I scoured the Support Communities and finally stumbled across a solution. I am not sure if this fixes the problem permanently but it certainly fixed it for now.

1. Open the Finder

2. In the Menu Bar, click Go

3. While holding the 'Option' Key, select Library

4. Expand the Application Support folder

5. Expand SyncServices and delete the Local sync file

6. Restart the system

Plug in your iPhone after this and it should resolve the issue. Let me know if it works.
