Apart from soundflower, which no longer works, is there any way to mute the audio stream while it is still being recorded with, for example. audacity?
I am wasting my life trying to figure this out. Yes, I am old and stupid so I need help. Thanks

Hm, seems that f10 changes my screen view. I guess that means I have something configured incorrectly. Any ideas?

You may have a “Fn” key to use the second function of your function keys. Try “Fn-F10”, unless you have a toggle mute key of course.
I don't know whether audacity (or others) can record sound output while you mute it, though. Perhaps it's simpler to turn the speakers off?
Thanks for the help with Fn key issue but it stops the feed to the recording program. this used to work perfectly with Soundflower but seems that now I have Mavericks it doesn't work at all. A great pity.
It's farily possible 10.9 changed the way audio plays back. Frankly, even prior to 10.9 (which I don't use, BTW), I'd not try to record audio when it's muted off (I wouldn't expect muted audio to be recordable).
While I'm sorry for you, I find it more logical/expected that way.
You know, switching to a newer OS version requires to change some habits. That's why I'm still using 10.6, as I hate changing my habits, and I'd be forced to if I upgraded (I know, I tried shortly every releases up to 10.9). I'm afraid it's fairly possible you can't do that any longer. Why can't you just switch the speakers off?
If you swtich the speakers off, the audio stream ends.
Success! I removed Soundflower compeltly, re-installed the latest version, followed the instructions on the Audacity help site and it works. I can record with the sound off and the stream keeps recording.

Ok. I don't understand how switching the speakers (e.g. your hi-fi speakers) off prevents an app to record the audio from within the Mac, but I'm glad you solved your problem.
