iPhone mail displays messages at half-width

Using the standard iPhone Mail program, most of my email messages are being rendered at half the width of the screen rather than filling the entire width. It does not appear to matter where the messages are coming from or what they contain.

My ipad does not have this issue. As you can see in the screenshot below, it looks like the mail program is getting confused about the width of the screen and wrapping text at what looks like exactly 50% width. The message header and title are OK.

Here is a screenshot:

Sure, but it still shouldn't be displayed at 50% screen width. The same message is rendered correctly on my iPad. Any given message I receive is pre-formatted. The same half-width behavior is seen with fully-formatted template-based commerical emails as well as hand-typed emails from people using different email clients.

Here is another example of a hand-typed message (redacted) - definitely not pre-formatted:

More info. I'm also on 7.1.1, iPhone 5. My wife is on 7.1.0, iPhone 5, and does not have the issue.

My phone data was recently backed up and restored to either the same device or a new one (it went to Apple for the power button repair and I'm pretty sure they gave me a new phone).

I could not see any noticeable differences in my settings vs. my wife's. (insert Mars/Venus joke here).

The only settings changes that occurred between me noticing this and not was the backup/restore. I thought I updated to 7.1.1 well before noticing this issue, but I don't actually remember. When did 7.1.1 come out?
