Q: Way to get power button to only shut off after being pressed for 3 seconds or more?
We're not used to having the computer's power button on the keyboard. Occasionally, when trying to hit Delete, one of us turns off the computer power.
I'm wondering if there is a setting (I really don't know my way around macs or I'd check myself) that can trigger the shutdown only after the power button has been held 3 seconds or more. This would prevent those accidental shutdowns.

There isn't any setting to change the behavior. It doesn't actually turn off the computer power -- just puts the Mac to sleep -- and a second tap should bring it right back. Here is some more information: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5869
The way the button works was changed to the current behavior with the release of OS X 10.9 and it was not met with unanimous approval as the following previous discussion shows: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5493452?start=0&tstart=0
If you would like to see an option or other change you can make a suggestion to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/
