Finder locks up when there is network traffic

Mac Mini Intel Core Dual 2007

OSX 10.4.8

Recently i had an issue where a Mac Mini 2007 (first Intel Mini) which worked perfectly for years didn't boot anymore.

I checked ran a check of the harddisk using Disk Utility and it turned out that both boot records, the main partition and the Recovery partition were corrupt.

I was able to boot from an external disk and save my data, so i was lucky.

I replaced the harddrive and tried to install OSX from the DVD only to find out that after appx 1 minute into the install the Finder would stop working. Spinning beachball.

Maybe this drive was also bad, so i replaced the drive again with yet another harddisk. Same situation.

So maybe something happened to the memory, maybe when a certain spot on the memory gets used the Finder stops. So i replaced the memory as well. Same situation.

What else can i swap out? Video is on board, so i decided to remove the Wifi card, just as a test. Then the installer runs correctly and the Mini works as expected. I was able to reinstall OSX and since i don't use Wifi, and assuming the Wifi adapter was at fault, i left the Wifi card out and reinstalled OSX.

That was in my lab. But when i moved the Mini to its place and hooked up the ethernet cable again i got the same symptom. After appx.1 minute Finder stops.

When i boot the Mini without the ethernet cable it boots ok. When i connect the ethernet cable i get the same symptom as when i had the Wifi adapter in the Mini, after 1 minute Finder stops.

The ethernet adapter is working because when i configure an IP address that is already on the network i get an error message. This can only happen if the adapter is able to listen on the cable.

I reset the PRAM, tried Safe boot all with the same result.

Any idea what might have happened here?

Thanks,

Ton.

Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this stoppage happens.

Click on the top line we want, Shift plus click on the bottom line we want, CMD+c to copy, then paste the text in a reply with CMD+v

A few dozen lines should be about right, hundreds or thousands won't likely be readable.

/Network/Global/DNS not present after 30 seconds

Do you maybe have IPv6 isabled?

could not open <</Volumes/Untitled 1/.fseventsd/fseventsd-uuid>> (No such file or directory)

We have a disk problem somewhere.

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)

Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.

Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.

If it does contain data...

I replaced the Apple wifi adapter with a broadcom one only to get the same result. Have been experimenting a lot and the only thing i can do to make the Mini work is to take out the Wifi card and not use the Ethernet port.

Without the wifi card i added the Console, Terminal and Activity Monitor to start at login to see messages when i boot the Mini, added the original wifi card back in and booted. Nothing useful shows up. I can switch windows, but the windows don't get focus (window shows completely, but window title stays grey instead of black) so i cannot interact with the applications. I was hoping to be able to use Terminal or Activity Monitor to kill Finder, but even that i cannot do.

Any ideas?
