Converting VOB to MOV files

I had old personal home video tapes which I converted to DVD's using a Video to DVD burner. Now I would like to back up the DVD's onto an external 4 T HD. I have Anytime VIdeo Converter with which I tried to convert the VOB files to MOV files, but it says these are copywrite protected. These are personal home videos!

Is there an easy way to convert them to MOV files?

Thanks!

I had the same requirement a couple of years ago. I used a product called Ripit to back up the entire DVD image onto my hard drive. Worked brilliantly. Plus, the ripped image could be played back using the OSX DVD player.

Is there a specific reason why you want MOV format?

I have since used Handbrake to convert the DVD images to video that will play on my iPad (in MP4/M4V format). Handbrake is free in case you've not heard of it, and again, I highly recommend it. (handbrake.fr).

Of course, if you just want to create converted version of your home videos, Handbrake will happily just convert the files straight from your DVD. Don't think it supports QT MOV file format though.

Thank you very much for your reply.

I downloaded Handbrake which gave me two choices for conversion: MP4 and MKV. I tried both, but only data files were created.

I wanted the MOV fromat for two reasons - I could view the files on my computer without using a dvd drive, and I would be able to do some editing on them in iMovie. I didn't do any editing when I converted the video tapes to DVD. Also I am concerned about the life of the DVDs and thought it I had them backed up on an external hard drive, it would be preserve these old videos "for posterity." But I suppose I could just preserve them as VOB files. I keep seeing a program called Video Converter Ultimate from Wondershare and am contemplating giving that a try for $40.

I went to the website for ripit, but I didn't see that it would create MOV format.
