Q: Allowed maverick updates now my screen is black with a cursor. Tried holding shift key on start up but it went black again and now no cursor???

My imac has a black screen with cursor after i allowed maverick updates. I tried holding shift key during start up and at first it looked like it was going to work, then it turned black again. What do i do?? Thanks in advance!

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), iOS 7.0.1

Here is what worked for me - so far. Go to Preferences/Energy Saver and turn off "Put hard disks to sleep when possible".
