how do i connect my Apple time capsule with a charter wired modem?

Can anyone help me with setting up a wireless network using a wired Charter modem connected via Cat 5 wire to my Time Capsule. I can connect the laptop to the modem directly and get internet, but cannot connect the cable to the Time Capsule for it to recognize it.... HELP!

You are powering off the modem at least 15-20 minutes before you attempt to connect it to the Time Capsule, correct?

Longer would be better, as it sometimes takes awhile for the equipment back at the cable company to reset and allow the modem to issue a new, fresh IP address.

As it stands, it sounds like the modem has associated with your laptop, and the modem will remember the laptop....and ignore any other device that might try to connect.....until the modem is fully reset.

If you are still having problems after you reset the modem, post back with the make and model number of the modem.

We also need to know what operating system you are using on the laptop. Is this still OS X (10.6.6) as you indicate in your tagline?

Bob,

It's a Arris TM 902. I unplugged it and reset both. Going into the airport settings I switched it to DHCP and NAT under the network setting. Then the light turns green on the time capsule but the Internet is orange. When I try to access the web, it looks like it tries to access a page then nothing. I did get one error message once in a while saying, "that I need to set the networks to bridge mode" but when I do that there is no pages pulling up at all". HELP!

As a last resort, the Time Capsule should be reset back to factory default settings, so you can try the setup again.

I'm still not clear on whether you are still using OS X (10.6.6) as you indicate in your tagline. Is that the case?

Or, are on you are using a newer OS like Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks.

Once we know what you have, we will provide a step by step to reconfigure the Time Capsule.

Try one more time before you take the Time Capsule to the Apple Store.

First, power off the modem completely by pulling the power cord from the back of the device. If the modem has a battery that is easily accesible, remove the battery. Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the modem as well. Leave the modem powered off at least 30 minutes.

Perform a Factory Default Reset as follows on the Time Capsule:

Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule

Wait a minute or two

Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in for another 10-12 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the Time Capsule

Release the reset button after the hold period, and allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light

Power off the Time Capsule again

After the modem power down period, reinstall the modem battery if it was pulled before.

Connect the Ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule

Power up the modem and let it run for 15 minutes

Than, power up the Time Capsule and let it run for 5-10 minutes

Open up AirPort Utility

Click on Other WiFi Devices

Click on Time Capsule

Follow the guided setup and prompts. It may take a few minutes for the light next to the world in AirPort Utility to turn green.

If you still cannot get an Internet connection on the Time Capsule, try another Ethernet cable. If still no luck, take the Time Capsule to an Apple Store or Apple Servicer to let them have a look.

If the Time Capsule works at the store, then you know that the Time Capsule is working correctly and you will need to focus on the modem or the Internet connection from your provider.
